But it is not true—or rather, it is only somewhat true. Helvetica is the official typeface of the MTA today, but it was not the typeface specified by Unimark International when it created a new signage system at the end of the s.
Why was Helvetica not chosen originally? What was chosen in its place? Why is Helvetica used now, and when did the changeover occur? We have lost this relationship between typography, material and architectural space. Knowing someone else is knowing his language, seeing his language. The Dubai Creek at Dusk, June The film tracks a year-long collaboration between five teams — comprising 15 Dutch and Middle-Eastern graphic designers, architects and typographers — as they seek to create truly-dual Arabic and Latin script types to be used in public spaces.
English is the ubiquitous hallmark of internationalism and multiculturalism in the Middle East, seen alongside its indigenous sister script everywhere, from shop and traffic signage to street furniture. The difference is that the Latin script has been evolved a lot and has been studied more. The Latin type faces that you see are quite developed and structured. Unlike the Arabic ones which have not significantly developed from calligraphy, so it is hard to make the Arabic script work as a font.
Reading is such a matter of course that at first glance, it seems there is nothing to say about it. The contributors to this volume have all given reading a second glance, and find much to say about it. Their investigations take us beyond the simple rubric of “literacy,” which was once understood as an evolutionary advancement in the generalization, abstraction, and reliable transmission of otherwise evanescent and changeable oral communication.
They all throw into question the assumption made a few decades ago, at the beginning of anthropological studies of literacy, that we could safely posit a “‘central difference between literate and non-literate societies"” Goody and Watt , cited in Goody et al. We are now coming to recognize a much more complex interplay of different forms of human communication, from lullabyes to hypertext and beyond.

Brahim Boucheikha Type Designers: The film documents the working process of the project, yet also contextualizes the cultural histories and realities of the North African identity and social fabric.
Film maker and video artist Jan de Bruin is well-known for his minute observing eye, wherein he can distill meaning in the tiniest or most mundane details. This audiovisual production investigates how lettering features in specific environments and its importance as a primary cultural identifier. The history of the various scripts investigated and their interactions through the ages, their visual qualities and characteristics will be examined through the ways in which the various designers work within these writing and design traditions.
The film will cover how do the designers move in and outside these different geographical, sociopolitical, design and writing spaces. Through interviews and testimonials the goals of the project and the motivation of the designers is made clear and the cultural implications of the fonts produced is explained. The film is becomes a meta-text on how the filmic medium is equipped or not to capture the media of writing and type design.
